Place the reference

Begin with what is in front of you. A 15202ST is not a 16202ST; a 26331OR is not a 26334OR. The reference number records the case material, the calibre family and the year of architectural revision. Get the reference right and the rest of the reading follows.

Read the case and bracelet

The Royal Oak case has fifty-seven hand-finished surfaces, alternating brushed and polished according to a discipline set down in 1972. The integrated bracelet's centre links are polished, the outer links satin-brushed. Look closely; the difference between a good Royal Oak and a great one lives at this level.

Read the dial

Identify the tapisserie. Petite Tapisserie on a 15202; Grande on a 15500 and 16202; Mega on the larger Royal Oak Offshore. Then the applied indices, the white-gold hands filled with luminescence, the small Audemars Piguet signature. Each is a deliberate decision recorded on the dial.

Read the calibre

Turn the watch over. The 2121 base shared with the historic ultra-thin tradition; the modern 4302 selfwinding with central seconds; the 2972 minute repeater; the 2950 flying tourbillon. The bridges are anglaged by hand, the screws blued by heat. The caseback is where the maison signs its name most clearly.

Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, in the Vallee de Joux, by Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet. The maison has never left its village of origin and remains owned by descendants of the founding families — a rarity among the great Swiss houses.

The Royal Oak debuted at the 1972 Basel Fair: a steel sports watch priced like a gold one, with an octagonal bezel held by eight visible hexagonal screws, an integrated bracelet, and a Petite Tapisserie dial. Designed in a single overnight by Gerald Genta, it reframed the luxury watch entirely and remains the maison's defining family.

Launched in 1993 by Emmanuel Gueit, the Offshore takes the Royal Oak's vocabulary into a larger, more muscular register — 42mm and beyond, exaggerated pushers, rubber-clad crown and bezel, and a "Mega Tapisserie" dial. It is the Royal Oak's louder, sportier sibling, and its own modern classic.

Introduced in 2019, the Code 11.59 is a round watch with an octagonal middle case and double-curved sapphire crystal. It is the maison's contemporary canvas for high complications — perpetual calendar, minute repeater, flying tourbillon, openworked dials — and a deliberate departure from the Royal Oak silhouette.

The maison's vocabulary includes perpetual calendar, minute repeater, tourbillon and flying tourbillon, split-seconds chronograph, openworked architecture and the ultra-thin selfwinding tradition inherited from the 1967 calibre 2120. Each one is a manufacture calibre signed in Le Brassus.

AP House reimagines the boutique as a private residence: living rooms, a bar, a library, a workshop area. The first opened in London in 2017; AP House Dubai followed, alongside Milan, Munich, Hong Kong and others. "To break the rules, you must first master them" is the maison's modern signature. It explains the order of the work: years of conventional calibres before the first openworked tourbillon, decades of integrated bracelets before the Code 11.59. The rules come first; the freedom comes after.
